Tango Underpants - Verdict

VERDICT: Two thumbs up!
Well, Mi Serenata Tango had a ball at the Film Premier of Tango Underpants. We
danced to four tangos at the back of Luna Cinema to a packed crowd with
champagne in hand and with our iPod blasting with tango music in the
background! Our Mi Serenata Tango participants Alex, Jenny, Sam, Rose, Anne,
Fabian, Martin, Raffa and I danced among the crowd with many onlookers. It was
very impromptu like street dancing in Buenos Aires.
The film in brief was about Carolyn who “found” herself and her mojo in Buenos
Aires. The film was light, fast paced with flowing dialogues (bits in Spanish
but it didn’t require subtitles; it was easily enough understood by those
non-Spanish speakers; the facial expressions, mannerisms and body language
translated across very well). There was a famous Argentinean actress in it who
played a shopkeeper; the scene in which Carolyn purchased her dress and
underpants at the shop and the dialogue that ensued between the shopkeeper and
her was absolutely brilliant and hilarious.
It was especially exhilarating watching familiar streets in Bs As and the
street dancers, whom for the majority of people who have been to Buenos Aires
would recognise, mainly that elderly couple who are a permanent fixture in San
Telmo.
I believe it will be screening nationally at some stage.
Tango Underpants was a short and very sweet 20 minute film – the plot is
familiar with Sally Potter’s Tango Lesson but without the angst and silent
moments. We completely enjoyed it. Go watch it!
